vSphere Fault Tolerance (FT)

A vSphere feature that keeps a live secondary copy of a VM on another host for zero-downtime failover.

Definition

FT continuously replicates execution state to the secondary VM, which takes over instantly if the primary host fails. It supports limited vCPU counts per VM depending on edition and requires a dedicated FT logging network.

Example

A critical licensing server VM is protected with FT so a host failure causes no interruption.

Exam tip

FT protects against host failure, not guest OS or application failure, since both copies run the same instructions.
