Voice over IP (VoIP)

Technology that carries voice calls as packets over IP networks instead of traditional circuit-switched lines.

Definition

VoIP requires low latency, jitter and loss, so networks use QoS markings, voice VLANs and PoE for phones. Codecs such as G.711 and Opus convert voice to digital data.

Example

An office replaces its PBX with cloud-hosted VoIP phones.

Exam tip

VoIP quality problems point to jitter, latency or loss, not bandwidth alone.
