Virtual GPU (vGPU)

Technology that shares a physical GPU among multiple VMs with time-sliced or partitioned profiles, such as NVIDIA vGPU.

Definition

vGPU enables graphics-accelerated VDI and AI workloads in VMs. Profiles define frame buffer per VM, and NVIDIA licensing is required. MIG (multi-instance GPU) provides hardware partitioning on supported GPUs.

Example

Engineering VDI desktops get a 4 GB vGPU profile for CAD applications.

Exam tip

vGPU shares a GPU among VMs; passthrough dedicates it to one.
