Verifiable Credential (VC)

Cryptographically signed digital credential, defined by the W3C, that a holder can present and a verifier can check independently.

Definition

In the verifiable credentials model, an issuer signs claims about a holder, the holder stores them in a digital wallet, and verifiers check the signature without contacting the issuer. Decentralized identifiers (DIDs) often identify the parties. Use cases include digital driver's licenses, employment verification, and the EU Digital Identity Wallet; Microsoft Entra Verified ID is one implementation.

Example

A new hire presents a verified employment credential from a former employer during onboarding.

Exam tip

VCs support selective disclosure and user-controlled (decentralized) identity.
