USB Power Delivery (USB PD)

A USB charging specification that negotiates higher voltages and currents over USB-C, up to 240 W.

Definition

USB PD lets the charger and device negotiate voltage levels (5, 9, 15, 20 V, and up to 48 V with Extended Power Range) for faster charging. Standard Power Range supports up to 100 W and EPR up to 240 W with appropriate cables. Cables carrying more than 3 A need an e-marker chip.

Example

A 65 W USB PD charger powers a laptop at 20 V/3.25 A.

Exam tip

Slow laptop charging over USB-C may mean a low-wattage charger or non-PD cable.
