Unequal-Cost Load Balancing

Distributing traffic across paths with different metrics, natively supported by EIGRP through the variance command.

Definition

EIGRP can install feasible successors whose feasible distance is within a multiplier (variance) of the successor's, sharing traffic in proportion to metric. Only loop-free feasible successors qualify. Link-state protocols do not support native unequal-cost load balancing.

Example

variance 2 under router eigrp 100

Exam tip

Only routes meeting the feasibility condition are eligible even if variance would otherwise include them.
