Typosquatting

Registering domain names that are common misspellings or variants of legitimate domains to deceive users.

Definition

Also called URL hijacking, typosquatting catches users who mistype addresses and supports phishing with convincing lookalike links. Related techniques include combosquatting (adding words) and homoglyph or IDN attacks using lookalike Unicode characters. Brand monitoring and defensive registrations mitigate it.

Example

micros0ft-support.com hosting a fake login page.

Exam tip

Typosquatting is listed in Security+ under social engineering; look for misspelled domains in the stem.
