Mimicking a trusted company's name, logo and communications to deceive victims.

Definition

Attackers copy the visual identity of brands such as Microsoft, banks or delivery services in phishing emails, fake websites, ads and social media accounts. It increases credibility of phishing lures. DMARC enforcement, brand monitoring and takedown services counter it.

Example

A fake DHL delivery notification email with authentic-looking logos and a malicious link.

Exam tip

Security+ SY0-701 lists brand impersonation explicitly among social engineering techniques.
