Token Bucket

The algorithm policers and shapers use: tokens accumulate at the CIR and each transmitted byte consumes one token.

Definition

The bucket size (Bc, and Be for excess) defines allowable burst. Tc = Bc / CIR is the interval at which tokens are added. If insufficient tokens exist, a policer drops or remarks while a shaper waits.

Example

CIR 8 Mbps with Bc 80,000 bits gives Tc of 10 ms.

Exam tip

Remember Tc = Bc / CIR.
