Committed Information Rate (CIR)

The average rate a provider guarantees or a policer/shaper enforces, in bits per second.

Definition

CIR defines the contracted rate; traffic above it may be dropped, remarked or delayed depending on the tool. The physical access rate is often higher than the CIR.

Example

A 100 Mbps Ethernet handoff with a 20 Mbps CIR.

Exam tip

Shaping to the CIR prevents provider policing drops.
