Switched Virtual Interface (SVI)

A virtual Layer 3 interface on a switch representing a VLAN, used for inter-VLAN routing or management.

Definition

An SVI is up/up only when the VLAN exists and at least one port in that VLAN is up and forwarding (autostate). Junos uses IRB interfaces (irb.unit) for the same purpose.

Example

ip routing ; interface Vlan20 / ip address 10.20.0.1 255.255.255.0

Exam tip

An SVI shows down/down if no access or trunk port in its VLAN is active; ip routing must be enabled to route between SVIs.
