Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)

An ICS architecture for monitoring and controlling geographically dispersed assets from a central location.

Definition

SCADA collects data from remote sites through RTUs and PLCs over WAN links (radio, cellular, leased lines) and presents it to operators via HMIs. It is used in pipelines, electric grids and water distribution. Many legacy SCADA protocols lack authentication and encryption.

Example

A gas pipeline operator monitors compressor stations hundreds of miles apart from a SCADA control center.

Exam tip

SCADA = wide-area, supervisory; DCS = single plant, process control.
