Distributed Control System (DCS)

A process control system in which controllers are distributed throughout a single plant or facility under centralized supervision.

Definition

DCS is used in continuous process industries such as refining, chemicals and power generation. Control loops run locally on controllers, while operators supervise through HMIs. It typically operates within one site on a high-reliability network.

Example

A refinery's DCS controls temperatures and flows across its distillation units.

Exam tip

Contrast with geographically dispersed SCADA.
