Successor

The EIGRP neighbor offering the lowest-metric loop-free path to a destination; its route is installed in the routing table.

Definition

The successor route has the lowest feasible distance. Multiple successors can exist with equal metrics, giving ECMP. The successor is stored in both the topology and routing tables.

Example

show ip eigrp topology lists 'via 10.1.1.2 (3072/2816)' for the successor.

Exam tip

Successors are in the routing table; feasible successors are only in the topology table (unless variance includes them).
