Stuck in Active (SIA)

An EIGRP condition where a router waits too long for replies to queries, eventually resetting neighbor adjacencies.

Definition

When a route goes active with no feasible successor, queries propagate until every router replies. If a reply is not received within the active timer (3 minutes by default), the neighbor relationship is reset. SIA-Query messages at half the timer let routers confirm progress. Stub routing and summarization limit query scope to prevent SIA.

Example

%DUAL-3-SIA: Route 10.1.1.0/24 stuck-in-active state

Exam tip

The fix for SIA is bounding the query domain with summarization and stub routers, not raising timers.
