Structured Cabling

A standardized, hierarchical approach to building cabling that organizes entrance facilities, equipment rooms, backbone and horizontal cabling, and work areas.

Definition

Structured cabling follows TIA-568 and ISO/IEC 11801 so cabling is predictable, testable and supports multiple generations of equipment. Subsystems include the entrance facility, equipment room (MDF), telecommunications rooms (IDFs), backbone cabling, horizontal cabling and work area outlets. Proper labeling and documentation are part of the standard.

Example

Every desk jack runs back to a labeled patch panel port in the floor's telecom room.

Exam tip

Know the subsystems and that horizontal runs are limited to 90 m permanent link.
