Horizontal Cabling

Cabling that runs from the telecommunications room patch panel to work area outlets on the same floor.

Definition

Horizontal cabling is installed in a star topology, limited to 90 m of permanent link, with up to 10 m total of patch and equipment cords for a 100 m channel. It is typically Cat 6 or Cat 6a UTP, sometimes multimode fiber.

Example

A Cat 6a run from the IDF patch panel to a conference room wall plate is horizontal cabling.

Exam tip

Horizontal = floor-level to the desk; backbone = between rooms and floors.
