Static RAM (SRAM)

Fast memory that holds data in flip-flop circuits without needing refresh; used for CPU cache.

Definition

SRAM uses several transistors per bit, making it faster but more expensive and less dense than DRAM. It is used for CPU L1, L2, and L3 caches and some buffers. Like DRAM, it is volatile.

Example

The 32 MB of L3 cache on a desktop CPU is SRAM.

Exam tip

SRAM = cache, DRAM = main memory; both are volatile.
