Solicited-Node Multicast Address

A multicast address (ff02::1:ffXX:XXXX) formed from the last 24 bits of a unicast address, used for efficient address resolution.

Definition

Each IPv6 interface joins the solicited-node group for every unicast address it holds. Neighbor Solicitations are sent to this group rather than to all nodes, so only hosts sharing those last 24 bits process them, which is far more efficient than ARP broadcasts.

Example

Address 2001:db8::1:2345:6789 has solicited-node address ff02::1:ff45:6789.

Exam tip

Take the last 6 hex digits of the unicast address and append to ff02::1:ff.
