IPv6 Multicast Address

IPv6 addresses in ff00::/8 that identify groups of interfaces, replacing the role of IPv4 broadcast.

Definition

The second byte holds flags and a scope field, such as ff02 for link-local scope and ff05 for site scope. Well-known groups include ff02::1 (all nodes), ff02::2 (all routers), ff02::5 (OSPFv3 routers) and ff02::1:2 (DHCPv6 servers and relays). Hosts join groups using Multicast Listener Discovery.

Example

A router sends Router Advertisements to ff02::1.

Exam tip

Every IPv6 multicast address starts with ff.
