Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR)

The ratio of desired signal power to the sum of interference and noise.

Definition

SINR extends SNR by including interference from other transmitters, not just ambient noise. It is a primary link-quality metric in LTE and 5G, and it better predicts performance in dense Wi-Fi deployments. Low SINR forces lower MCS rates.

Example

A 5G UE reports SINR of 15 dB on its serving cell.

Exam tip

SINR is lower than or equal to SNR because it adds interference to the denominator.
