Shift Left

The practice of moving testing, security, and quality activities earlier in the software delivery lifecycle.

Definition

Finding defects and vulnerabilities early is cheaper and faster than finding them in production. Shift-left practices include unit tests in CI, static analysis on pull requests, IaC scanning, and developer-run security checks.

Example

Running SAST and dependency scanning on every pull request instead of a pre-release audit.

Exam tip

Shift left is about earlier feedback; 'shift right' refers to testing in production with monitoring, canaries, and chaos experiments.
