Continuous Integration (CI)

The practice of merging code changes into a shared branch frequently, with each change automatically built and tested.

Definition

CI detects integration problems early by running builds, unit tests, linting, and security scans on every commit or pull request. A broken build is fixed immediately so the mainline stays releasable.

Example

Every push to a pull request triggers a GitHub Actions workflow that compiles the code and runs 800 unit tests.

Exam tip

CI is about frequent integration plus automated verification; merging monthly with automated tests is not CI.
