Shared Tree

A multicast distribution tree rooted at the RP and used by all sources for a group, written (*,G).

Definition

Shared trees (RPT) reduce state but may produce suboptimal paths because traffic goes via the RP. PIM-SM last-hop routers typically switch from the shared tree to a source tree.

Example

show ip mroute shows (*, 239.1.1.1), RP 10.0.0.1

Exam tip

(*,G) = shared tree; (S,G) = source tree.
