Security Debt

Accumulated unresolved security flaws and deferred security work in software, which increase risk over time.

Definition

Like technical debt, security debt grows when fixes are postponed, dependencies are not updated or known weaknesses are accepted without plans. Industry reports show long-lived flaws are common in large codebases. Tracking it with SLAs and remediation budgets prevents it from compounding.

Example

A backlog of 1,200 unresolved SAST findings older than one year is a security debt metric.

Exam tip

Answers that track and budget remediation beat ones that only discover flaws.
