Scareware

Software or pop-ups that use fear of infection to trick users into buying fake security products or installing malware.

Definition

Scareware displays alarming fake warnings that the computer is infected and urges users to purchase or download a "fix" or call a fake tech support number. It is related to rogue antivirus and tech support scams. Browser controls and training mitigate it.

Example

A browser pop-up claiming "1,284 viruses detected - call Microsoft now" with a toll-free number.

Exam tip

Scareware is a social engineering tactic; it often installs the very malware it warns about.
