Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP)

Software that is not clearly malicious but is unwanted, often installed through bundling, such as toolbars or adware.

Definition

PUPs are frequently installed alongside legitimate software with pre-checked install options. They can track users, show ads or degrade performance. Endpoint security products detect them as a separate category so organizations can choose whether to block them.

Example

A "PC optimizer" installed alongside a free PDF tool that nags users to buy a license.

Exam tip

PUP detections are often low-severity but may indicate risky download habits.
