Scalable Video Coding (SVC)

An extension of H.264 that encodes video in layers so receivers can drop layers to match bandwidth or screen size.

Definition

SVC (H.264 Annex G) produces a base layer plus enhancement layers that add temporal (frame rate), spatial (resolution) or quality fidelity. A multipoint switching server can forward only the layers each participant can handle without decoding or transcoding. Similar layered behavior, called simulcast, is achieved by sending multiple independent streams at different resolutions.

Example

A cloud meeting server forwards only the 360p base layer to a mobile participant on a weak connection.

Exam tip

SVC and simulcast enable switched (SFU-style) conferencing, avoiding the latency and cost of transcoding MCUs.
