SAVEPOINT (SQL)

A named marker inside a transaction that allows a partial rollback to that point without abandoning the whole transaction.

Definition

SAVEPOINT name sets the marker and ROLLBACK TO name undoes changes made after it, while earlier work in the transaction stays pending. SQL Server uses SAVE TRANSACTION.

Example

SAVEPOINT before_bonus; UPDATE ...; ROLLBACK TO before_bonus;

Exam tip

Rolling back to a savepoint does not end the transaction; you still need COMMIT or a full ROLLBACK.
