Sandboxing

Running code in a restricted, isolated environment that limits its access to the system.

Definition

Sandboxes contain untrusted or suspicious code so it cannot harm the host. Browsers, mobile operating systems, and PDF readers sandbox content, and security tools detonate suspicious files in sandboxes to observe behavior. Windows Sandbox and application containers are common implementations.

Example

An email gateway opens attachments in a cloud sandbox and blocks those that attempt to modify the registry.

Exam tip

Sandboxing is the answer for safely running untrusted code or analyzing suspected malware.
