Isolation

Separating processes, systems, or networks so that compromise of one does not affect others.

Definition

Isolation is achieved through virtualization, containers, sandboxes, separate VLANs, process memory protection, and hardware enclaves. It limits blast radius and lateral movement. In incident response, isolating a compromised host contains an attack.

Example

Each tenant's workloads run on isolated virtual networks in a public cloud.

Exam tip

Isolation and segmentation both limit blast radius; isolation is typically stronger.
