Sampling Rate

The number of times per second an analog signal is measured when converted to digital, such as 8 kHz or 48 kHz.

Definition

The sampling rate must be at least twice the highest frequency of interest to avoid aliasing. Telephony uses 8 kHz, wideband voice 16 kHz, CD audio 44.1 kHz and professional AV and Dante networks typically 48 kHz or 96 kHz. All devices in a digital audio system must share a common clock rate.

Example

A Dante network runs at 48 kHz, so a 44.1 kHz device must use sample rate conversion.

Exam tip

Pro AV standard is 48 kHz; mismatched rates cause pitch or clicking issues.
