Salesforce Record ID

Unique identifier assigned to every record, in a case-sensitive 15-character or case-insensitive 18-character form.

Definition

The first three characters are the key prefix identifying the object, such as 001 for Account and 003 for Contact. The 15-character ID is case-sensitive and appears in the UI; the API returns the 18-character version, which is safe for case-insensitive tools like spreadsheets.

Example

001 prefix = Account, 005 = User, 006 = Opportunity.

Exam tip

Use 18-character IDs in Excel-based VLOOKUPs to avoid case-sensitivity mismatches.
