Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

A document describing a material's hazards, safe handling, storage, PPE, first aid, and disposal requirements.

Definition

Safety data sheets (formerly material safety data sheets, MSDS) are provided by manufacturers for chemicals and materials such as toner, batteries, cleaning solvents, and thermal compounds. They follow a 16-section format under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard. Technicians consult the SDS for spill cleanup, exposure response, and disposal instructions.

Example

Check the toner's SDS for cleanup and disposal guidance after a large toner spill.

Exam tip

When asked how to handle or dispose of a chemical or toner, the answer is to consult the SDS (MSDS).
