Route 53 Routing Policies

Route 53 options determining how DNS queries are answered: simple, weighted, latency, failover, geolocation, geoproximity, multivalue and IP-based.

Definition

Weighted routing splits traffic by assigned weights; latency-based sends users to the region with lowest latency; failover returns a secondary record when the primary health check fails; geolocation routes by user location; geoproximity routes by distance with adjustable bias; multivalue returns up to eight healthy records; IP-based routes by client CIDR.

Example

Weighted records send 10 percent of traffic to a new application version for a canary release.

Exam tip

Map scenario keywords: percentage split equals weighted, best performance equals latency, active-passive DR equals failover, legal content restrictions equal geolocation.
