Disaster Recovery (DR)

Policies, tools and procedures for restoring IT systems and data after a disruptive event such as a regional outage or ransomware.

Definition

Cloud disaster recovery strategies, in order of increasing cost and decreasing recovery time, are backup and restore, pilot light, warm standby and multi-site active-active. Strategy choice is driven by the workload's RTO and RPO and must be validated by regular testing.

Example

A company replicates backups to a second region and tests restoring its ERP system there every quarter.

Exam tip

Match the strategy to RTO/RPO: hours equals backup and restore; tens of minutes equals pilot light; minutes equals warm standby; near zero equals active-active.
