Rogue Access Point

An unauthorized wireless access point connected to a network, bypassing perimeter security.

Definition

Rogue APs may be installed by employees for convenience or by attackers to gain network access. They create unmonitored entry points. Wireless intrusion prevention systems, 802.1X port authentication and regular wireless surveys detect and prevent them.

Example

An employee plugs a consumer Wi-Fi router into a desk network jack.

Exam tip

Rogue AP is connected to your wired network; an evil twin imitates your SSID to lure clients.
