Evil Twin

A malicious wireless access point that impersonates a legitimate SSID to lure clients into connecting.

Definition

Attackers broadcast the same network name, often with stronger signal, and may use deauthentication attacks to push clients onto it. Once connected, victims' traffic can be intercepted or redirected to captive portals that harvest credentials. WPA3-Enterprise with server certificate validation mitigates it.

Example

A fake "Airport_Free_WiFi" hotspot capturing travelers' logins through a fake portal.

Exam tip

Evil twin + deauth is a common pairing; certificate validation in 802.1X/EAP is the defense.
