Risk Threshold

Specific measurable level of risk or uncertainty at which a response, escalation, or decision is triggered.

Definition

Thresholds translate tolerance into concrete trigger points, often for key risk indicators. When a threshold is crossed, predefined actions such as escalation to management or invoking a response plan occur. PMI uses the term for the level of exposure above which a risk is addressed.

Example

If more than 5 percent of endpoints lack critical patches for 30 days, the CISO must be notified.

Exam tip

Thresholds are what make KRIs actionable.
