RFC 4594 Service Classes

IETF configuration guidelines that map application classes such as VoIP, video, signaling and bulk data to recommended DSCP values.

Definition

RFC 4594 defines twelve service classes, including network control (CS6), VoIP telephony (EF), broadcast video (CS5), real-time interactive (CS4), multimedia conferencing (AF4x), multimedia streaming (AF3x), signaling (CS3), OAM (CS2), low-latency data (AF2x), high-throughput data (AF1x), standard (DF) and low-priority data (CS1). Cisco's 12-class QoS model is based on it.

Example

A QoS policy based on RFC 4594 places Teams audio (EF) and Webex video (AF41) into separate classes.

Exam tip

Know the major mappings: EF voice, AF41 conferencing video, CS3 signaling, CS1 scavenger, DF best effort.
