RF Connector

A coaxial connector such as N-type, RP-SMA, RP-TNC, or SMA used between radios, cables, and antennas.

Definition

RF connectors must match impedance (usually 50 ohms) and frequency rating. Each connector introduces insertion loss, typically about 0.5 dB. Reverse-polarity connectors were historically used to meet FCC rules discouraging non-certified antennas.

Example

Outdoor APs commonly use N-type connectors.

Exam tip

Every connector adds loss; include it in the link budget.
