Restore Testing

Regularly verifying that backups can actually be restored and meet recovery objectives.

Definition

Testing ranges from file-level spot checks to full disaster recovery exercises and automated recovery verification in isolated sandboxes. Untested backups may be incomplete, corrupt or too slow to meet the RTO.

Example

A quarterly test restores the ERP database to an isolated network and validates application startup.

Exam tip

A backup is not proven until it has been restored; exams favor regular restore tests.
