Reported Distance (RD)

The EIGRP metric a neighbor advertises for its own path to a destination; also called advertised distance.

Definition

RD tells the local router the neighbor's distance to the prefix. Comparing RD to the local FD determines whether that neighbor is a loop-free feasible successor.

Example

Neighbor advertises 10.5.0.0/16 with a metric of 2816; that is its RD.

Exam tip

Advertised distance (AD in older texts) is not administrative distance; watch the acronym.
