Registered Memory (RDIMM)

Server memory with a register that buffers command and address signals, allowing more modules per channel.

Definition

Registered (buffered) DIMMs reduce electrical load on the memory controller, enabling larger capacities in servers. They usually include ECC. RDIMMs cannot be mixed with unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs), and consumer boards do not support them.

Example

A dual-socket server populated with 16 x 64 GB DDR5 RDIMMs.

Exam tip

Unbuffered and registered modules are not interchangeable.
