Registered DIMM (RDIMM)

A server memory module with a register that buffers address and command signals, enabling more modules per channel.

Definition

RDIMMs improve electrical stability for large-capacity servers at a slight latency cost. Load-reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) also buffer data for even higher capacity. RDIMMs, LRDIMMs and unbuffered DIMMs generally cannot be mixed.

Example

A two-socket server is populated with 16 x 64 GB DDR5 RDIMMs for 1 TB of RAM.

Exam tip

Do not mix RDIMM, LRDIMM and UDIMM types in the same server.
