Recovery Model

A SQL Server database setting (Simple, Full or Bulk-logged) that controls how the transaction log is kept and which restores are possible.

Definition

The Simple model truncates the log automatically and allows restores only to the last full or differential backup. The Full model keeps the log until it is backed up, which enables point-in-time recovery. Bulk-logged minimally logs bulk operations while keeping log backups.

Example

ALTER DATABASE Sales SET RECOVERY FULL;

Exam tip

Point-in-time restore requires the Full (or Bulk-logged) recovery model plus log backups.
