Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR)

Restoring a database to its exact state at a specific moment, for example just before an accidental delete.

Definition

PITR combines base backups with log replay up to a target timestamp. Managed services provide it automatically: Azure SQL Database (1-35 days), Amazon RDS, Cloud SQL and AlloyDB. Snowflake Time Travel and Delta Lake time travel give similar recovery at the table level.

Example

Restore an Azure SQL database to 10:42 UTC, one minute before a bad UPDATE.

Exam tip

PITR is how you recover from logical errors such as a bad DELETE; replication alone would copy the error.
