RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE)

A protocol that runs RDMA over Ethernet; RoCEv2 is routable over UDP/IP and typically requires lossless or congestion-managed Ethernet.

Definition

RoCEv2 uses UDP port 4791 and relies on PFC and ECN (often with DCQCN congestion control) for performance. It is widely used for AI training back-end networks, NVMe/RoCE and hyperconverged storage.

Example

An AI cluster fabric is tuned with PFC and ECN to carry RoCEv2 GPU-to-GPU traffic.

Exam tip

RoCEv1 is Layer 2 only; RoCEv2 is routable over UDP.
