Product Backlog Refinement

The ongoing act of breaking down and adding detail, such as description, order, and size, to Product Backlog items.

Definition

Refinement is an ongoing activity, not an event. Developers who will do the work are responsible for sizing; the PO may influence them by helping trade-offs. Items that can be done within one Sprint are deemed ready for selection.

Example

The team spends part of each week splitting a large epic into stories.

Exam tip

Refinement is not a Scrum event and has no fixed timebox in the 2020 Guide.
