Privacy Extensions

IPv6 features that generate random, temporary interface IDs so a host's address does not reveal a stable hardware identifier.

Definition

Defined in RFC 8981, temporary addresses are used for outbound connections and rotated regularly, while stable-privacy addresses (RFC 7217) stay constant per network but differ between networks. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and most Linux distributions enable them by default.

Example

ipconfig on Windows lists a "Temporary IPv6 Address" alongside the main IPv6 address.

Exam tip

Multiple global IPv6 addresses on one interface are normal because of temporary addresses.
